Research methods

I have professional experience of the following qualitative, quantitative, formative, summative and longitudinal research methodologies:

  • In-depth interviews - structured and semi-structured

  • Quantitative surveys

  • Diary studies

  • Ethnography and contextual inquiry

  • Competitor analysis

  • Remote/ in-person, moderated/ un-moderated usability testing

  • Card sorting and tree testing

  • Participatory design workshops

Quantitative data is information about quantities; that is, information that can be measured and written down with numbers.

Qualitative data is information about qualities; it is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons, opinions, and motivations.

Formative research is exploratory and is done at the beginning of the design process to to gain insight into the subject area aiding in problem identification.

Summative research, or conclusion research, is done at the end of a project and is used to measure it’s success.

Longitudinal research involves repeated observations of subjects over long periods of time.

Examples of how I utilise these research methods can been seen in examples of my work, in the portfolio section of this website.
